What is push to talk? I see it in phone feature lists all the time and have no idea what it is! Can anyone help me out?

No UK networks officially offer it to all of their customers yet, so it's not really significant here.

It's a way of seeing what other users are 'available', a bit like on Instant Messaging, and being able to push a button on your phone and send a voice message to a user or group of users - like a walkie talkie. Other integrated features will probably include PTT transfer of images and videos, and text content - ultimately it's something that could displace a lot of SMS traffic.

I understand (from somewhere something I read) that the UK [Euro?] mobile ops have an agreed x-net standard for PTT and that the only thing holding it back is the commercial implications for SMS.

I would suspect that is the case, which network would want to lose revenue from SMS for a cheaper option like PTT

I dont really use push to talk because its far better to SMS, but I could see how the networks could lose out

Ahem, Orange have launched a Push to Talk Solution called Talk Now. They aren't advertising it, but it is available.

Welcome to Talk3G!

It's not available to all customers, as I said. Infact, it's only available on about 3 different handsets, none of which are mainstream. Looks like Orange has decided to wave the 'standard' approach to PTT, ie how Nokia have integrated it into their handsets, goodbye and play around with their own little idea.

Call up and ask for it on your own handset if you don't believe me ;)

Whereas most systems work over GPRS (including the client built into the 6680), Orange's works using normal voice calls. That's why they charge on duration, not volume of data used. Company providing the 'solution' is Kodiak networks, over a year ago they were talking about providing clients for Symbian handsets.....

It take time for the handset manufacturers to support a new service, hence the limited handset range at present.
