Good to see Orange and Nokia opening up the challenge to the mass public, well developers anyway, to try and come up with some decent 3G apps. The more people that get involved developing ideas the better, and it's good that the big guns recognise this.

Orange today announced the winners of the Orange Nokia Series 60 challenge, launched to encourage the developer community to design applications for use in the 3G world on the Nokia 6630 device, using the Symbian OS and the Series 60 smartphone platform. The challenge was announced in September of last year at Oranges first Code Camp developer event which took place in Poitiers in France and attracted around 200 developers from all over the world. Since then, close to one hundred developers have submitted their ideas to a joint Orange Nokia panel. The shortlisted developers have been through the development phase which has included workshops, usability audits, prioritised technical support as well as Symbian Signed testing in two rounds.
Steve Glagow, Director of Orange Partner comments: We were delighted, not only with the volume but also the calibre of the entries for this award. The category winners really stood out in terms of creativity and innovation, and importantly by developing applications that our customers will really want to use. In the 3G world, one of our key success factors will be our ability to deliver innovative, exciting mobile application solutions and content to our customers which will help drive usage and ultimately, revenue.
The categories were: Best Consumer Solution and Best Enterprise Solution with a special additional category of Most Entrepreneurial Developer which was created during the judging process.
The winner of the Best Consumer Solution is NINJ Ltd. with their Virtual Radio application, the first streaming MP3 radio player designed for use on a mobile device. More than 100 radio stations with websites are included on Virtual Radio today and more stations are being added on a daily basis. The application was designed for use over 3G but can also be used via GPRS and EDGE.
Flextronics Software Systems receives the Best Enterprise Solution award for its Visitor Management System, a messaging system which allows users to receive alerts including a picture and the details of the individual. This application means that users can be kept informed with relevant and up to date information on visitors whether at home or in the office.
The award of Most Entrepreneurial Developer was conceived of during the judging process as the panel was struck by the entrepreneurial spirit of the Phlogger team. Having started with a vision of building a mobile community, they developed the idea of building relationships through sharing photos. Many sleepless nights and lost weekends followed but eventually, phlog.net came to fruition.
Lee Epting, Vice President, Forum Nokia comments: The challenge received tremendous interest among highly qualified developers and resulted in several compelling applications. The developers were enthusiastic about the opportunity to work together with Orange and Nokia. The free-of-charge technical support and usability audit that Forum Nokia provided them allowed developers to spend more time on the actual coding.
As part of their prize, the winners will receive free places to attend the next Code Camp event later in the year at which they will be presented with their award. They will also receive the latest Nokia device based on Symbian OS as well as having their applications promoted as featured products in the Orange internal catalogue for four weeks. Products that feature in the catalogue have a possible distribution to over 54 million Orange customers in 16 countries.
