When I lost my last phone - and number - it wasn't a huge deal. Now, though, it would be a minor tragedy if I lost my current number...is there any way I can make sure I can get my number back, should I lose the phone? Are PAC codes only for those who are about to transfer their no. to a new (U)SIM?

To the best of my knowledge, if you report your handset lost or stolen you should be issued with a new SIM card carrying the same phone number. Handset replacement is, of course, dependent on insurance or the depth of your pocket. The best way to verify this on a per-network basis would be to call up.

If i'm wrong then I'll gladly stand corrected! I've had a few SIMs from Orange that have all carried the same mobile number. If my SIM card was lost I don't see why that would change.
