Check your networks coverage using one of the links below:

O2 (http://www.webmap.o2.co.uk/)
Orange (http://coverage.orange.co.uk/uk/UKCoverageSearch.htm)
Vodafone (http://maps.vodafone.co.uk/coverageviewer/web/default.aspx)
T-Mobile (http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=ctl_change_state&name=searchResults&value=off&nextpageid=phones_cua_uc) (& Virgin (http://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/services/at_home/index.jsp))
Three (http://www.three.co.uk/three/coverage/coverageChecker.do)

These computer generated predictions should give you a pretty good idea of what's going on in your area. Remember - never buy a 3G handset if 3G coverage is essential to you by going off a computer generated map alone. Calling Customer Services should help you find out whether there are actually any masts close to you, and, if possible, you should ask to take a phone on trial for a few days. You can also use Sitefinder (http://www.sitefinder.radio.gov.uk/) to pinpoint your nearest masts, but again it's not a guarantee.

3G handset trials are currently available in Orange shops, and may be available in other mobile phone stores - just ask.

What an excellent resource.

Should be of great help to those considering the different options available.
