It has come to my attention that Orange plan to launch PAYG 3G in October. it has been penciled in for 1st October but I expect it to be within the 1st 2 weeks of October.

Aparantly data will be VERY cheap. And that is a major understatement when you compare to other networks.

3 phones i know will be on offer are the Nokia 6680 for approx £400, the Sony Ericsson K600i will be approx £160 and the Moto C975 will be approx £80.

K-600i seems good value at £160, not sure about the 6680 price in terms of appeal.

It'll be interesting to see what the final offering will be. I hope they do something to encourage phone/modem use as the prices now are just too scary for individuals.

Data should be under £1 per mb on Orange it all i can say.

Im going to get the cheapest 3G phone on Orange PAYG (Moto), take out the USIM and stick it in my JasJar when I get it.

Then put a 2G one in the Moto and sell on as a 2G phone

£400 seems a bit step for a 6680 when you can get one for about £300 and lower if you look around. I also suspect that the 6680 will drop in price once more when the n70 comes out

Any ideas about a 3g sim only PAYG deal?

Orange will NOT sell PAYG USIM cards anytime soon so the only way to get one is by getting a phone from them

£160 is indeed good value for the K600i, i cant see anyone buying the 6680 at £400 especially when the sim free version is £329.99 at cpw. Good step by orange, 3pay will get more competition

I agree that at £1 per MB is good value compered to the rest of the mobile phone companies, but for 3G it is still just too expensive.

That month I used 200MB on my Orange try 3G, without even thinking about it! (Just by looking at a news / weather video each day!)

That would have cost me £200 normally, but I suppose I could opt for the £85 / 1GB option after my Try 3g ends

The problem seems to me that we are still be charged for data when it was SLOW over a 2G connection with usage only a few MB's a each month. Now though, your phone can eat "eat" 100's of MB's of data. Where are the 3G friendly data tariffs?

There does indeed seem to be a failure to recognise that data over 3G is far too expensive. Perhaps this is in part because any tariff reductions will result in data use on GSM generating far less revenue. At some point in time the benefits of cheaper data being consumed en masse over 3G will outweigh the benefits of expensive data being consumed in minute amounts. Until that time comes, us 'early adopters' will be allowed to keep on paying the price.

Of course, we all recognise that 3G brings huge capacity benefits and allows for higher data rates. What we often forget, however, is that the backhaul from the various cell sites and regions also needs to be improved to cope with the extra network traffic. This means the costly and time consuming process of establishing new microwave links, setting up new leased lines and/or laying down fibre. The networks will be addressing these issues, but they'll keep the price of data high until they're ready for data consumption growth.

Orange are set to launch 3G on Prepay. The date mentioned is Saturday 1st October with 3 or 4 handsets to be on offer. These are the Sony Ericsson K600i, Motorola C975, Nokia 6680 and maybe more.

If you don't want a phone and only want the USIM these will be available at a later date.

Remember to keep checking back for more info!

Here's the prices and the handsets... I imagine these will fly out the door on the 1st!

6680 - £270
6630 - £160
SE K600i - £190
Z500 - £240
Z107 - £100
Sanyo S750 - £80
Sanyo S750i - £100

Might even splurge out on a S750i just for the sake of it!

£1 per MB, I wonder what other networks will do now and o2 has to drop the £3 per MB price for their i-mode services
