This could be tricky.

3 who supplied the handset originally have it as an exclusive in the UK and all NEC 3G phones have software specifically designed to support 3's own services. If it supports GPRS then you could try the settings avialble on the site listed below. You will have to be able to change them and that could be the stumbling block. I will do some research later and try and get back to you with some concrete info.

Meanwhile get the GPRS and WAP settings for Vodafone here: http://www.filesaveas.com/index.html

Who unlocked your NEC for you? Did they mention anything about being able to flash the software or anything like that?

For the past week I've been trying to make a e616v work as a Vodafone payg. Not much success.

For starters, asking for settings from Vodafone, they gave me the generic ones. Here is a copy of the email I got:

Vodafone GPRS settings (WAP):

Homepage: http://live.vodafone.com
APN address: pp.vodafone.co.uk
Gateway (IP) address: 212.183.137.012
Username: wap
Password: wap
Session type: Continuous / permanent
Authentication: Normal
Security: Off
Port number: 9201

Vodafone MMS settings (MMS):

Access Point Name: pp.vodafone.co.uk
Username: wap
Password: wap
Authentication: Normal
Data bearer: GPRS
Gateway IP address: 212.183.137.012
Session mode: Permanent
MMS Message Server/URL: http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms/

So far, I have been unable to make MMS work.

Internet on the mobile does work, for example I can get the Google page. But it seems to be a bit slow, perhaps because of the 2.5g bandwidth.

I haven't been able to use the phone as a modem for my laptop and establish an internet connection. Pity, as this is the most important thing to me.

Finally, I haven't been able to get Vodafone's 3g signal. Vodafone uses the same SIM cards for both 2.5g and 3g phones. It is the handset that makes the difference within their network. Their 3g handsets automatically look for the 3g signal and use the 3g network. At least that's what I've been told from the Vodafone stores (Durham and Newcastle).

On the other hand, I think that e616v, when used with a 2.5g sim card looks only for the 2.5g network. It needs a 3g sim card (also known as USIM cards) to look for a 3g network. With my unlocked phone, I can select the network manually (Menu, Settings, Network Settings, Network select). The only networks that appear are Vodafone UK, Orange, T-mobile UK and O2 UK. Hence my theory. But at the end of the days it's just my theory.

Anybody with more success or alternative ideas?

Friendly, Kostas.

PS Sorry for the rather long post!

Update:

I've managed to use the phone as a modem for my laptop. It's really simple. Make a new internet connection, set it to dial *99#, username: wap, password: wap. Make sure that the phone uses Vodafon's APN, that would be pp.vodafone.co.uk. Then connect the phone to your laptop, I used the usb cable. Fire the new internet connection and there you are. The only downside is that it seems to be slow and I got some timeout error with certain servers/websites.

Thank you for the update Kostas, that's very encouraging! Your investigation into this issue is greatly appreciated, I'm sure it'll help a great number of people in the same boat.

Thanks!

Another update. I have managed to make MMS work, partially. The settings that I used were:

MMS Server: http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms/
Proxy: 212.183.137.012:8799

I could receive picture messages alright (send a couple from my contract Three), but I couldn't send them. And I made sure that I was not out of credit.

The MMS & WAP problems with unlocked NEC handsets has always posed problems.I got rid of all my NEC kit a while back(cheap poor white trash in my opinion) as they caused too many problems even now the people who bought my NEC stuff from EBAY are having problems.

You may find this link useful to check your settings against http://www.mphone.co.uk/mms_wap_settings.html

When you get there, just click on whichever mobop you want info on. Its not all of them but does include the main players.
