Just looking at the 'coming soon' section of CPW's website today it struck me that the most significant handsets being launched are now mainly 3G capable.

Its taken over two and a half years since its launch for 3G handsets to become comparable with GSM varients. The tides appear to be turning now in the highly compeditive 'contract handset' sector. There is still someway to go in the more popular 'pre-pay' sector though. Sure Vodafone, 02 and Orange all have sub £100 pre-pay 3G offerings but those tend to be the unpopular models that they can't shift on contracts. Hopefully a better range of cheaper 3G pre-pay models will arrive in 2006 and Chineese companies like Huewai and ZTE look set to provide their 1st generation models at teen friendly prices.

As time progresses it looks like the younger users will be the driving force for 3G. They will decide whether they want to pay a premium for phone downloads and if they like the idea of paying for clips and watching TV, but they need the kit to provide the facilities. I doubt if 2005 will be the big 3G christmas many have predicted but 2006 might well be.
