Hi Damian :)
As you'll know the 6230 is a 2G phone, but we'll try and help if we can.
Try this thread: http://www.talk3g.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1600&highlight=headset

I tried connecting the headset and you do get volune through it but the problem is still there when i disconnect the headset. the code *#7370# doesn't seem to work on my phone. do you have any other ideas?

Other than taking the battery out while the phone is switched on, leaving it for a while, then re-inserting it - and/or doing a factory reset - it might be a job for your nearest Nokia service centre.
You can find your nearest Nokia service centre here: http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,76918,00.html
