Handset prices fell last week as operators started dumping excess stock onto the market, traders said.

The price drops are apparently due to operators making excessive orders during the run-up to Christmas as well as the early months of 2005.

Sources claimed that prices on handsets such as the Nokia 6230, 7610 and, most significantly, the steel-fronted 6170 flip-phone (pictured) have fallen sharply – nearly 20% in three working days, according to one trader.

He added: ‘Prices have been bobbing up and down a fair bit in the last weeks, but some [handsets] have really fallen.’

Trading sources said operators ‘over-compensated’ for the conservative stock orders made over the same period the previous year.

Distributors and traders have been encouraged to take advantage of the price falls and sell the handsets in overseas markets.
