From The Inquirer (16/11/2005):

1 million views in 14 days

VODAFONE UK customers have accessed one million streams of mobile TV in 14 days. This follows the launch of Sky Mobile TV on the Vodafone 3G network but does include some viewing of Channel 4 too.
BSkyB’s director of business development, Stephen Nuttall, claimed, “These figures demonstrate a real consumer appetite for mobile TV. " But do they? The Sky TV service is free to Vodafone subscribers until February 2006.

Still it's pretty good going since Vodafone's installed base of 3G handset owners was only 341,000 people as of 30 September 2005 in the UK. Vodafone added that it was experiencing significant interest in channels such as the England tour of Pakistan.

Talk about niche markets – cricket fans who own a 3G handset attached to the Vodafone network. Phew!

Hardly surprising really, and jolly good news for Vodafone and [I hope] the Customer. Bring it on. More TV please :)

Considering how the UK almost stops during the main footy season (not on my watch it dont!) there is scope for Vodafone to get stuck well in to Mobile TV to sports fans, especially as Sky own Premiership rights. We could, reasonably, anticipate that if Vodafone play their advertising cards right they would take a huge gouge out of the mobile phone customer market just with Premier Football alone. The same for Rugby and of course as we've already seen, Cricket.

It can only be all good for Vodafone, despite Arun Sarin's disappointing results to The City yesterday. Those shareholders are pure cowards, and they'll be clamouring back if Vodafone can make Content their "killer app" for 3G.
