O2 Airwave has won the bid to run the fire services national radio system.
Firelink, the part of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister responsible for procurement of the communications system, says O2 Airwave has beaten shortlisted supplier EADS to run the system (Computing, 10 November), but has yet to finalise contract details.
Plans for a national digital system for the fire service were first mooted six years ago, but the procurement has been dogged by delays. Firelink was originally due to be signed in July 2004, but the date shifted to November 2004, then March 2005, and then May.
Under the current timetable, the service will be rolled out to brigades by 2008.
