That's good I suppose. I think I'm on the £2.50/month one.
Although, why couldn't they just make it all wireless web instead of having this bigger walled garden?

The £15 add-on is for wireless web and additional data is onlt £1 per mb so it's pretty good for most people wanting data.

Just remember that Wireless Web only works in 3 video coverage areas and has no GPRS fallback. That makes it quite a specialist proposition as its use on trains etc will be far more restricted than the blanket coverage (allbeit slower) offered by GPRS networks.

A step in the right direction at last but perhaps too little, too late for most business data users.

The £15 wireless web bundle should shake things up a bit - 56mb is more than enough for the average mobile workers throughput. I'd have liked to have seen the £45 option reduced though, it's not very good value for money.

A good day for Three UK users.

I take it that this is for contracts only. Dam pity as most of their users are Pay as You Go!

So much for a good day for three?

I think its a great day for Three. Contract customers always get things quicker than PAYG because they are definate income. With even the £15 add-on you must have it for 6 months where as PAYG customers can just not topup if they dont want too.

you got that wrong mate....

"Add-ons purchased at the time of connection have a 6 month minimum term."

purchases after connections its just 30 days minimum....

That's interesting... I wonder why they'd do that? Perhaps retailers can get higher commissions for selling add-ons with a connection, and so Three require the customer to retain that add-on for a certain period of time to cover it.

Good observations.

Exactly. Got my 56 bundle activated this morning. No Gmail access (POP, m.gmail.com or www.gmail.com), nor can I get to my work's IMAP server. Web sites work fine, Google's great - how I've missed it :-) Tomtom seems to connect to the server OK now, although I haven't got the traffic service set up (yet). Wayfinder still doesn't work. RSS feeds seem to work OK.

OK Tomtom traffic works great, signed up for the 30 day trial & updated the traffic. Should be handy for the commute. Can also now SyncML to mobical.net. Still no joy with Gmail :-(

The good point is it beats the Data prices for other networks.

The bad one is its only for 1 hours or 1 day,.

If it was 50p for 1MB and £1 for 4MB a moth it would of kicked the ass out of the other networks.

Im not one for using loads of data, if I can pop into a Internet cafe somewere while I am away thats fine, but I could end up paying £7 pounds per week rather that the contact price of £2.50. when I'm loiky to be loging in to read the news or E Mails.

May be I'm just being to hard on this ? offer?

No, you're right, it is pretty pants. Someone downloading the odd 10kb polyphonic ringtone could end up paying 50p where PAYG on other networks would be in the region of 8p. However, for some people the deal will work out good value. Swings and roundabouts as always - no network seems prepared to stick it's neck out and offer something straightforward AND good value.

Not sure that day will ever come , but this is all rather a step in the right direction and to be endorsed as a positive one at that. Certainly for those in very well covered 3 areas this is likely to be a good proposition for data. Although if, as bsrj has found, there is not connectivity to corporate mail or VPN gateways then the value of the Data proposition is weakened significantly.

No such restriction via the likes of Vodafone. Come on 3, finger out you lot!

That's great news :) Now Three just need to stop blocking a tonne of legitimate ports!

What we need to do is email Three complaining of of the blocked ports then maybe they'll release them!!

Ben

If any Three UK users want to list any ports they specifically need open with the service operated on that port then I'd be more than happy to put it to the Press Office.

I haven't tried SSH or VPN yet. Anyone with any experiences?

I can't get an Internet Connection to work from my TomTom One through my 6680. If I watch the Connection Manager I can see the modem connection and every few seconds 56 bytes gets sent but nothing ever comes back. This goes on for a minute or so and then the TomTom gives up.

Any Suggestions?

This is the message that I've sent to TomTom but I haven't received a reply yet:
----------------------------------------------
I am trying to configure TomTom Traffic.

My phone is a 6680. I am on the Three network with the Wireless Web add-on. I can browse the internet and check email from my phone so I know that the internet connection works ok.

My phone and my TomTom One are paired using blutooth.

When I go through the TomTom One Wireless Internet Connection Settings I select

Phone:6680
Country:UK
Provider: 3 GB

The TomTom One then connects to my phone and a modem connection is created.

If I then watch my phone's "Connection Manager" I can see the modem connection and every few seconds 54 bytes are sent, but nothing ever comes back. This goes on for a minute or so until the TomTom One gives up.

I have also tried manually setting up the internet connection using the settings shown for the Three network shown here:

Country: UK
Operator: 3
Service: Wireless Web
APN: three.co.uk
Username: X (blank)
Password: X (blank)
IP: assigned
DNS 1: assigned
DNS 2: assigned

Please help.

Hey, welcome to Talk3G!

I don't have tomtom personally so can't give you any specific advise, though hopefully someone else can, but you can get support on connecting your Tomtom One here: http://www.tomtom.com/support/product.php?ID=171&Language=1&FID=3326

From what you've typed it would seem that you've already paid attention to all this, but it might be worth trying both the login script formats provided. Being:
at+cgdcont=1,"ip","three.co.uk","",0,0
and
AT+CGATT=0

Good luck!

IMAP & Secure POP (Gmail) ports now work, as well as IMAP :-)

Ben
7th March 2006, 06:33 PM
Really? That's good news. I did send a list of legitimate ports to the Press office as promised, so hopefully that gave them a heads up :)
