HELP!

For some CRAZY reason all of a sudden my CA-53 USB cable has stopped working.

I say 'stopped working' what I mean is - I connect my phone up the usual way etc... I get the little bubble saying Nokia N70 connected etc.. then when I try to do any up/downloads I just get "This operation could not be completed"..

ARRGH!

I've uninstalled and re-installed the Suite/Driver etc about 3 or 4 times now and STILL it wont work.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME?!

( also - its not just my phone - it doesnt like my partner's 6680 either! )

Problem solved!

(hopefully this can help any other peeps having issues)

Thank you for contacting the Club Nokia Careline.

With regard to your query about being unable to reinstall PC Suite,
please follow these instructions to ensure that PC Suite is completely
removed from your PC. Please read this email carefully before proceeding
and do not delete any files other than those noted below.

1) Before deleting any files manually, you should ensure that you have
removed the PC Suite using Add/Remove Programs within the Control
Panel.

2) You should now kill the following processes within the processes tab
of Task Manager.
· DATALA~1.EXE( or DataLayer.exe);
· SERVIC~1.EXE (or ServiceLayer.exe)
· MPAPI3S.EXE
· PCSYNC2.EXE

Note: To open Task Manager, right-click on the task bar and select Task
Manager.

3) Open Windows Explorer and delete the following folders if present:

i) C:\program files\common files\nokia
ii) C:\program files\nokia\nokia pc suite

4) Additionally, if your PC runs NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP you
should delete c:\documents and settings\\phone browser.
If your PC runs an older operating system you should delete c:\my
documents\phone browser.
5) If you receive any messages relating to files being in use please
take a note of the filenames and see Note 1 below before continuing.
6) Next, download and run Nokia Register Clean 3 you will find this
file at
http://www.nokia.com/faqsearch/ShowQA?id=46758&prod=1787&ch=75881&si=0®=3&adv=false&qt=clean
7) Now reboot your PC PC Suite should be completely removed.

In the event that PC Suite has not been removed, please empty your temp
directory. This can be done by going to c:\windows\temp for Windows XP
and c:\winnt\temp for Windows 2000. You can select all the files in
here by holding down CTRL + A. The files can then be deleted by holding
down shift then delete. Once the temp directory has been emptied reboot
your PC, you should be able to install the latest version of PC Suite.

Note 1:
Where files cannot be deleted because they are in use follow these
instructions to remove them individually before proceeding to step 5:

1) Open the folder that contains the files and delete all files that
can be deleted.
2) Rename each file that remains by right-clicking on it and selecting
Rename from the menu.
3) Empty the recycle bin and restart the PC.
When the PC has been restarted you should be able to delete the
remaining files.

Note 2
If you find that these steps have not removed Nokia PC Suite it is
possible that your registry has become corrupted in some way. This can be
easily resolved using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility available
from Microsoft. If you wish to use this utility please visit:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301. Please
note that Nokia does not make this application and we are referring you
to this site as it would appear that the problem is no longer with
Nokia PC Suite but with the installation of Windows you are currently
using.

Please don't hesitate to contact us again if you have any further
questions.

Yours sincerely

Erm, wow. Seems like a lot of fuss to remove PC Suite... surely the Uninstall application should just remove it entirely first time around!

Still, can't fault them on the thoroughness of the response.

Yes, it should indeed. But Windows uninstaller is notorious for not completing the job properly (next time you uninstall something watch for the message that says "some files could not be removed"). However, I suspect it is more down to sloppy coding of the uninstal script used [by the uninstaller] by the original programs makers rather than the WinUninstaller itself.

Great response from Nokia, but they ought to go have a quiet word in the ear of their programmers :D

NB: I've got lumps of other mobile phone desktop suite apps stuck in my HDD and Registry. Occasionally when I can muster the courage I hack them out of the registry. It is not something I'd suggest to anyone who is not experienced in doing this though. Get it wrong and you've got a brand new paperweight where your PC used to sit!

Got another PC Suite Query.. (not so much a problem per se) ..how can i explain this?

Right..
When im browsing my SMS Inbox via my PC Suite..

Phone,
Messages,
Inbox..

Right?
Right.

Then i'm on List view and i see 'From', 'Message', 'Date & Time'.

There's two things I'm unhappy with.

1) The 'from' column only shows me numbers. Not names. Some names appear but not all.. and I can't work out what I'm doing wrong.

2) The 'date & time' column doesnt work properly.

So...

Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

This is great - keep solving my own problems!

Ok

1) The 'from' column query? Sorted. All my numbers in my phone book have the prefix 07. But all my received text messages coem from numbers with the prefix +447 ( the '+44' replacing the '0' in case of international sending etc ) - so all I have to do is change ALL my phone book entries from 07 to +447 and it'll work ok.. I tried this with a couple of names and numbers and it works.
So yeah - there you go. Makes managing text messages much easier I find.

2) Bizarrely - once I'd sorted out my names/numbers query - this one seemed to sort itself out!

All very odd.

But yeah - here endeth the lesson!
:D

Those of you with the version before should already know..
But yeah - just in case!
