Welcome to Talk3G.

I guess I can only urge you to steer well clear of the NEC e606, e616, and both e808's. I'm sure others will do the same. They're very slow, poorly spec'd and have a chronic user interface. You'll think you've gone back to analogue :)

How's the transition to 3G going in the Philippines?

indeed do not touch these phones very very bad performance and huge. If you are looking specifically for an NEC 3G handset then possibly the e616v which is probably the best or the soon to be released e636 which seems to have a decent spec

As mentioned by the previous two posts, I would avoid the NEC handsets that you mentioned. As a newly started 3G network I'd say your operator is in a slightly better position, it'll have a much greater range of handsets to choose from at launch, you should get what we've been seeing here in Europe for the last 3 years pretty quickly, I'd say just sit back and see what your operator releases over the next 4- 8 weeks. I'm surprised that they've gone with the NECs as the first offering, hardly confidence building or awe inspiring for 3G technology! Perhaps Mr. NEC has thousands of units, unused, sitting in warehouses out your way and just wants rid of them!

Keep us informed of your Philippines 3G experiences!

I'm in Philippines and trying to use NEC e808 which I've obtained from ebay auction. In this phone SIM Lock has been released according to seller and I test 3G connection with both Globe and Smart pre-paid and post paid SIM. As my testing, the phone can access to 2G (GSM) but cannot access 3G at all. I'm still investigating why this phone is not able to connect to 3G in Philippines. I suppose that the problem may come from phone unit itself but I have no way to check. I'm going to some expert shop for SIM unlock here in Makati.

Hello Nyaonyao, welcome to Talk3G. Is the Phillipines 3G using UMTS? If not that may explain why you are able to pick up GSM (2G) but not 3G if the handset is for the UMTS standard.

Other causes could be that the 3G reception where you are is very much weaker than the 2G. Or that the handset is set to 2G only, that can often be changed in the settings menus.

Or the fact three UK hardcoded the settings into the phone and there is no way you can pick up 3G signals and MMS/internet will not work either.

Hello Hands on & E616Vboy123

I thank you so much for your kind advice. Yes, 3G system which both Globe and Smart are using is UMTS, w-cdma as well as one in UK. My staying area is centre of Makati (Business Capital city in the country) and 3G signal is as strong as 2G. Why I know? because other than NEC e808 I'm using Motorola M1000 (Equivalent to A1000) and sharp 903SH. Both are the unlocked mobile phones which I've used in Japan before coming to Philippines. Each one has lettle problem, but totally they are able to work in both 3G and 2G including GPRS (2.5G). Now, only NEC e808 cannot be acivated for UMTS. When I turn on the phone, 2G is automatically selected and I try to select "Set Area Mode" in network setting of the menu, however it's not functioned because it's desable with gray coloured item. This situation is depeding upon the SIM card. When I insert SMART post-paid SIM, I can select manually 3G in "Set Area Mode", however UMTS mode seems to be selected but actually it cannot work. In other SIM, post-paid Globe card and all pre-paid card cannot select this menu item and I have no way to change from 2G to 3G. In this situation, when I push triangle key, "Out of coverage" message indicates and 3G does not work. I doubt if SIM Unlock has been successfully applied to 2G but not to 3G. I don't have much knowledge about unlocking and so I'm going to some secret private unlocking service shop in the city centre.
I appreciate it if you could give me more advice in this issue.

Best Regards,
