LONDON, March 16 (Reuters) - British mobile phone company Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday it had more than 10 million customers using its third generation (3G) services, some two weeks ahead of the targeted date.

The world's biggest mobile phone operator by sales had targeted 10 million customers by March 31 when it launched its 3G services in November 2004.

"This is an important milestone for Vodafone and I am very pleased that we have achieved our target ahead of time," Vodafone Chief Executive Arun Sarin said in a statement.

Vodafone needs ever larger numbers of customers to sign up to 3G services such as faster Internet browsing and video calling to counter slowing revenue growth in traditional mobile services.

Customers using 3G typically spend more than customers using previous generation phones. Mobile operators including Vodafone have spent billions of dollars in building their 3G networks which they hope will lead to higher future revenues.
