View Full Version : SPV 5000 versus Palm Treo 650

This is my first post as I am considering my first 3g/wireless phone (UK Orange network) and a SPV5000 is on offer as a free upgrade leaving me with my trusty PalmTreo650 as a spare (last years upgrade)

So the question is....

Is there an equivalent to yahoo intellisync and yahoo calendar
http://uk.calendar.yahoo.com/
http://www.intellisync.com/pages/Solutions/By-Business-Need/PIM-Synchronization/ Consumers/

.... for the SPV 5000, as I use these platforms on the palm

or an alternative 3G and wireless capable PDA that I should be looking at that does?

Your wise counsel on this matter most appreciated!!!

Hello, welcome to Talk3G!

First off, the M5000 is big. One might even go as far as calling it unweildly. However, it's a powerful Windows Mobile device and, if you're a Windows user, the integration may well make it worth every ounce of bulk.

Windows Mobile devices synchonrise with Outlook on your computer through Microsoft ActiveSync. So, you'll get the best functionality if you use Outlook for all your callendar and email needs. ActiveSync is also used to install applications on the device and transfer files to and from it. ActiveSync can, AFAIK, be used over Bluetooth and/or WiFi as well as USB - giving you a lot of flexibility as to when and where you sync.

Having never used Palm OS I'm afraid I can't offer any futher advice, but hopefully other members will be able to. All I can say is that Windows Mobile and Symbian are probably more advanced now than Palm ever will be.

Enjoy the forum,
Ben

Hello, welcome to Talk3G!

And thank you for having me!

The SPV 5000 is smaller than the Treo650 I think ( if it is the SPV 5000 I was offered) which is great AND it looks like the fact it is a Windows flavoured device keeps me in touch with Yahoo Calendar!!

thus:

Intellisync for Yahoo! has been updated to support even more applications!
Works with Outlook 2003, Outlook Express 6.0, Pocket PCs, ACT! 2000 and 6.0, Lotus 6.0

I guess the SPV is in there somewhere as it is a pocket PC?!!!

I use Eudora and Yahoo Calendar instead of Look/Out!/look after I got a corrupted PST file 2 years into a project and spent a week unf**k-up..ing it...

Will await that call from the Orange Shop to when it gets delivered

Regards

John

AFAIK there are new 3G HTC devices (these PDA style things that the networks rebrand as their own are made by HTC) coming shortly. One with a slide out keyboard if I remember correctly?

I guess it just depends if you want/need 3G or not! If you do any form of mobile web browsing, downloading large email or email with attachments or if you watch mobile video/tv then 3G is a must.
