Was browsing around the news pages on the BBC Technology website and came across a link to a new service that allows you to place a call from your PC to any Phone and use your own home phone to make the call.

You simply enter your own number and the number you want to call and the sysytem calls your phone and connects you.

You can trial it for free without obligation then its a small payment to register and take advantage of calls to International destinations at very cheap rates. Calling other members is free subject to a maximum fair use of 1000 minutes a month.

If you want to try 'web activated telephony' follow the link below and let us know how you get on.

I saw an article on this on BBC's Click on their World Service while on holiday last week. Doing a Google search (http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&hl=en&q=web+activated+telephony&meta=&btnG=Google+Search) results on numerous competing providers.

The BBC's Click article suggested that all is not quite what it seems inasmuch as "free" and "global" are not to be interpreted too literally. However, they did say that their findings were encouraging and worth a try for those for whom the service provides coverage.

Click identified around three or four providers of this technology, Google suggests very many more!

Edit: Opera have teamed with JahJah - "Make calls with Opera Mobile and Opera Mini: JAJAH's Web-activated telephony solution optimized for Opera's browsers" see here (http://www.internetadsales.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=7218)

A link to the Click article http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/4782895.stm

Pretty much on the same lines of the Click programme, reference to other providers of this technology.

Not quite the same, but I'll shortly be kitting out my offices with Vonage. It'll be my first attempt at VoIP and god knows how well it'll all come together! VoIP hasn't really been on my radar screen until now, but one way or the other that's about to change.
