View Full Version : Noooooo! Broken N80.

I don't have insurance. Disaster.
My phone's screen is cracked. Not the outer screen, just the important bit inside. I get nothing showing up on the screen apart from a few mad colours. I have no idea how it happened, but I presume I must have bashed it against something without realising it.
I phoned up Orange and they said that they could do emergency insurance for £100 and the 6 quid a month for the next 12 months. That's like 172 quid to fix a broken screen. I moaned and then they suggested that I could phone up Nokia and see what they say. I will try them tomorrow.
The phone still works as long as I don't mind not being able to see what I am doing. The "say caller's name" and voice commands are proving to be incredibly useful. I managed to put bluetooth on and hook it up to my computer so I could read my messages.
Has anyone had to get a screen fixed before?
I might see if our house insurance will maybe cover it.

House insurance may be the best way to go. We did a claim on our for a stolen D500 and had to pay £50 excess, which was better than paying the full £129.99 for a new one.

That may well be my best bet.
Any idea how much Nokia would charge to fix it?
Our insurance is £60 excess, so I don't know if it would be worth it, especially if it would push the premium up.

Is it worth taking the normal Orange insurance, then... say a few days later, just by accident something happens with your n80? And, by some stroke of luck you've just taken out insurance?

I had thought about that, but surely they must have some checks in place to prevent that?

Not really, there is no "statute of limitations" and it cannot be determined precisely when your phone broke. Its a risk they take as insurers, very many punters do not claim and so it is a profitable business [for them] or the insurers would not be in it.

You would of thought so, however, my mother-in-law dropped her uninsured phone in the sea on holiday a year or so ago, she called Orange and they suggested that she take the insurance out, then call back a few days later and report it. Fair enough she was lumbered with the extra £5 a month for the rest of the contract, however at least she didn't end up having to fork out a a couple of hundred for a new handset!

Orange actually suggested that?
Doesn't that count as fraud?
I suppose I could do that, although they now already know that my phone is broken.
I've already screwed them out of one phone when a flashing went wrong, I dunno if my conscience could cope with doing them out of another.
Oh wait, they are a big multinational company and deserve to be ripped off :D

Quite possibly, so I could never endorse those type of activities! :D
I think the chap at the time didn't just come out with it, it was just put out there as an idea that some customers in the past had done, you know, that he'd just heard about. I think he was just being a nice guy TBH! A bit of good old customer service is what I'd like to think of it as!

I'm just getting it on on the house insurance.
£60 quid excess, feels a lot better than forking out 170 and I have a clear conscience :)

Woo, got the new one through today, and it seems to be a generic nokia one - no branding on or in the phone, but I've not checked to see if it's unlocked.
Still got the old phone as well, I think I will see if a service centre will fix it then stick it on ebay.
I'm happy.
