Nokia Software Update for N80

Hurrah, thanks getti for letting me know that Nokia now officially support end user software updates for the N80 amongst other S60 3rd edition handsets! http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate

Unfortunately the software reports that my phone has the latest version. I'm sure that's not true. More fool me for updating it previously in less than official ways.

Still no 6280 - and that handset is probably one that needs an update given the problems with the early relase firmware. Not that mine needs it, being a stable version from T-Mobile, but there are plenty out there that are quietly living with the 6280's problems.

Got my N80 up to version 4.. fixes all the known issues I previously had with the phone.

Too bad the Nokia 6280 isnt on the list *yet*.

[I have Nokia N 80 v4.0623.0.41 but its Camera and Vedio does not work as it was previously in the old version i.e. 3.0. Can some one help in getting good result of Cemera and Vedio.

Well, as I type my N80 is being updated by the Nokia Software Updater to a new version. Thank the lord! I was about to switch back to my W900i due to an annoying bug on my N80 where it takes up to a couple of minutes to send a text message, during which time the handset is completely unresponsive. I just hope the Nokia somehow heard my threats and is going to start playing ball ;)

One thing I've noticed already, there's a new Media Player option when I connect the phone to the PC over USB. I assume this is to facilitate accessing and using content stored on the handset?

Well that's a bit rubbish, even after Settings Wizard it's still asking for the message centre name and number. Trying +447785016005 courtesy of Google Groups.

Hurrah, it works. Now I'm trying to set the messaging memory to the memory card. After lots of screen flashing and a long pause it appears to have worked, only the little piece of crud has gone and lost all my existing texts stored on the memory card. It kept the delivery receipts. Charming.

Oh well, I can send and receive texts in 'normal time' (for a S60 phone) again, so I guess that's me sorted. If you've gotten this far, thanks for experiencing my software update with me :p

Just an update for those of you who may not have done this yet.

I must admit that for the past few weeks/months I've not really been on mobile forums, especially this one (I'm bad, I know!), but while browsing avforums yesterday I came across this post (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3855944&postcount=37) on the N80 firmware updater thread (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=404717). Basically you need to download this piece of software (http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/files/NSS/NSS10385.zip) (NSS) and the Nokia Software Update (NSU) software.

These instructions lifted from Nokia N80 Mobile Blog
NOW WE CAN BEGIN:
Install NSS
Install NSU
Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
Open NSS and click on “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
Click on the icon « Phone info »
Click on “Scan”
As you can see, now you can change the product code (on the right of the « phone info »
window of NSS). Type the product code and then mark the case “Enable”.
Now press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed
(you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
Close NSS and you can proceed now with the NSU flashing.
Start PC Suite and select software update and follow the on screen instructions. When the flashing with NSU is over, start-up your phone and you’ll have the pleasant surprise that your phone’s firmware is the latest Nokia non-branded firmware in date!

Some basic advice. Back up your phone using pc suite first. It will ask you to do this anyway. I removed my memory card, but you have to leave the sim in. Time wise, I think it took me 45 mins and that included downloading all the software and installing it. I didn't have pc suite installed before. Make sure your phone is charged, or have your charger handy.

Basically, this probably will invalidate your warranty as you are changing your phones product code, but the benefit is you will get generic firmware installed .

I downloaded and ran the upgrader on my N80 today and have noticed that its response time is much improved. :)

No problems using the Nokia software with the orange branded handset at all. After installation all of the branding is intact and there are some additional new services which were not there previously.

Software Version V 4.0623.0.41 RM92 Nokia N80 (31.04)

Now I wonder if there will be an upgrade to convert the standard N80 to the Internet new version?

You can change your firmware from the standard firmware to the N80ie version by running NSS (http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/files/NSS/NSS10388.zip) and changing your N80's product code.
After installing NSS, enter product code 0539363 (The EURO 1 Pearl Black Internet Edition code). The process only takes a couple of seconds.

The NSS (http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/software.htm) site has a flash movie of how to flash your phone, although you wont need to do that.

Then when you run Nokia Software Updater it will automatically install the IE firmware.

According to Truphone the Nokia Software Updater will upgrade your N80 to an N80ie (Internet Edition) without all of the shennanigans of changing product code. The Updater is currently delivering Firmware version 4.0707.0.7. Which is nice :)

I updated my firmware (to 4.0707.0.7) over the weekend. Not sure if performance is any better. The nokia software updater is certainly a useful tool and should really have been broght out sooner.

I couldn't see the update to 4.0707.0.7 when I tried to update the device OTA, but it worked fine in Software Update.

It's mostly VOIP security/priority & power consumption improvements. Haven't tried the VOIP yet, but my battery does seem to be lasting a little while longer.

Longer lasting battery? On the N80? Sounds like an earthshaker to me :D

I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised at the battery life on the 2nd-user N80 [which I upgraded to an N80ie] that I am currently in posession of. Once I stopped Truphone doing its continual WLAN scans the handset survives a day's standby with occasional, but lengthy, phone calls. I've even had it go through well into the next day before I got jittery and put it on charge.

Noticed that with v4.0707.0.7 the Internet Call menu shows GPRS profiles as well as WLAN - Truphone now works great over 3 ;-)

Why? TM exclude VOIP from the original & lower W&ws, but 3 allow Skype & any service that runs on your handset, apart from Sling/Orb. What's the problem?

Those services are part of the package, I'd imagine using 'other' VoIP services is frowned upon.

Yes, its the non-3 VoIP that they'll not be best pleased with you about. It is written in their Ts&Cs somewhere what you are not allowed to use 3's Data services for.
