I've had a 770 for over a year now. I have a penchant for interesting technologies and this was definitely one. The 770 and 800 fit into a market which doesn't really exist yet; Nokia is hoping one develops. The devices themselves are interesting in that they run (generally) an OS platform based on Debian Linux (it's called Maemo) and there's a dev community set up around it porting existing Linux applications and developing new ones targeted at the device. By far the most important feature of both devices, however, is the screen, which is 800 pixels wide. This makes it possible for HTML browsing and is a far superior experience to any other mobile device of that form factor.
The 770 was a little underpowered and didn't support everything you'd want to do. Being early adopters we also had to put up with a lot of bugs. Still, useful and interesting, and one to 'retire' at the end of its life alongside the Psion 5, rather than throw away!
As you say, not a phone, but coupled with a HSDPA connection and a cheap tariff it's probably mobile internet nirvana.
