Vodafone added 652,000 customers to its UK customer base in the three months ending December 2006 as it enjoyed high Christmas prepaid activity.

The operator increased its UK customer numbers by 3.8% for the quarter compared to the previous year.

Over 60% of the 16.9 million customers at the end of the period were prepaid.

UK prepaid churn surged from 39.5% to 47% over the year due to competition, customer self-upgrades and SIM only promotions. But contract churn fell from 20.2% in 2005 to 17.9% in the same quarter in 2006.

During the quarter, average monthly revenue per UK user amounted to £23.60, with contract subscribers paying £43.70.

Vodafone said the UK in particular benefited from 'more competitive offerings during the period'. An increase of 13.9% in outgoing voice usage per customer resulted from a free weekend calls offer for 1.7 million prepaid customers.

111,000 or 17% of customer additions for the quarter opted for 3G devices. At the end of the quarter, Vodafone had 1.5 million UK customers using 3G handsets.

Vodafone's total mobile customer base was 198.6 million at the end of the quarter, up over 20% after a reduction of 1.7 million customers.

Chief executive Arun Sarin said: 'These KPIs are very much in line with expectations and show that we are continuing to make progress in executing our strategy.'

The business said it was still interested in acquiring a controlling interest in India's Hutchison Essar in order to expand into the 'important Indian market'.

"Vodafone had 1.5 million UK customers using 3G handsets" - not bad at all, they need more than 17% of new additions taking 3G handsets though, but I think they, like everyone, has realised that the uptake is in the hands of handset manufacturers now.
