I've been using Truphone (http://www.truphone.com/welcome.tru) on my N80ie for the past couple of days and I am impressed. Now I know I said I was impressed (http://www.talk3g.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3950) with fring (http://www.fring.com/) (and I am) but Truphone has better call clarity.

So what is Truphone?
"Truphone routes your mobile calls via the internet. That means free mobile calls to other Truphone users & very cheap calls to anyone else."
Currently when you sign up you get a £2 credit and free landline calls to 40 countries, including the UK :D

I'm using it over my home wifi connection. I'm scared to try it over 3g as I'm still on O2.

It's currently only available (http://www.truphone.com/more_info/what_phones.tru) on the newer N series and E series phones.

It's also free (http://www.truphone.com/more_info/what_does_it_cost.tru) to call other SIP users. I think it's definitely worth a try.

Here is a youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NNxRUPwx7M) video guide showing you how to install it on an E65. The E65 looks like a nice phone BTW!

Been using it on my N80 in the USA to avoid painful roaming changes. Cracking stuff, great call quality & as long as there's a free WLAN around it saves £££s.

What am I missing here? Is it using the WLAN for Truphone calls - and re-routing via GSM/3G when there is no WLAN? I am unclear whether or not it tries to use 3G/GPRS (i.e. mobile network data  which would attract horrendous charges from most mobops).

I can see that there is an initial GPRS cost for downloading the application in the first place. But what after that? Any more [mobile network] data consumption?? Or is is strictly WLAN?

Okay, I think I've got my head around this ..... and installed it on my firm's N80 (! I wonder if they'll pay me for upgrading it to an N80ie :D ).

I've not made a call on it yet - save to play with voicemail settings. Will do that later this morning when normal people are up and awake.

Just looking at the tariffs ... slight digression I suppose - but 3's call termination rates are very obvious and surpassed only by "Mobile Other" which I supose is non-prearranged MVNOs.

UK FREE (Landlines till 30th June 2007)
UK Free £0.000
UK Mobile BT Fusion £0.153
UK Mobile Guernsey £0.289
UK Mobile Inquam £0.206
UK Mobile Jersey £0.253
UK Mobile O2 £0.149
UK Mobile Orange £0.157
UK Mobile Other £0.300
UK Mobile Three £0.293
UK Mobile T-Mobile £0.164
UK Mobile Vodafone £0.150
UK Non-geographic Local £0.058
UK Non-geographic National £0.113

The service is only suited to handsets with built-in WiFi, so that takes out a whole ton of others. But good news for our Early Adopters on T3G is that it does support the Nokia N95, albeit with a small bug for which there is a workaround as described on their forum here --> http://www.mobilevoipforum.org/showthread.php?t=402

That'll please a lot of folk as I do rather think the N95 is going to be the Hottest Handset for 2007. Expect to see every man and his uncle carrying one :)

@Gorilla - what is your battery life like on the N80 with Truphone enabled? I left mine on without charge last night and it was as dead as a very dead thing this morning. I had to charge it up from flat!! All I did, I think, was lead WLAN scanning on - and the N80 between UMTS, WLAN and Bluetooth drained the battery overnight! I had only made one 20-minute Truphone call on it!!

I concur that battery life takes a beating. I generally turn wlan, bluetooth etc off when I'm not using them to preserve battery life. I'll only ever use truphone for outgoing calls.

I think the default is for Truphone to register & stay connected. Check Settings->Connection->SIP Settings->Truphone-home (or whatever it's called)->Registration & change it to When Needed. Truphone diverts your VOIP calls to your mobile anyway, so there's no need to use it for incoming unless you have a lot of Truphone clients.
