View Full Version : Speedtesting - not always what it seems ...

I have been playing around with speedtest.net - possibly one of the better speed test sites around. Its certainly pretty :D

My ISP connection is 20Mbps/512Kbps using Virgin Media (Blueyonder) so good turns of speed should be apparent. But really that is only one part of the equation. Distance introduces latency, and the end point capacity can have an effect also.

Here are a few results during an idle moment of play ...

I live in North Kent - about 30 miles out of central London.

London Results (50 Miles)

(best result ever)

Maidenhead Results (100 Miles)

Athens (1,450 Miles)

New York (3,500 Miles)

Los Angeles (5,500 Miles)

Hong Kong (6,000 Miles - check out that latency!)

Results like these are not at all likely across 3G or HSDPA, although the latter will show better (lower) latency - ping - timings and higher overall speeds.
