Telecoms regulator ComReg has released its report on the sector for the second quarter of 2007. According to the watchdog, market revenues grew 6.6% year-on-year to EUR 1.13 billion (USD1.56 billion) in the three months to end-June. Total call traffic increased marginally to 4.48 billion minutes, with mobile traffic up 22% to 2.13 billion minutes and fixed line minutes down 9% to 2.35 billion. The mobile market finished the quarter with 4.8 million subscribers, with cellular penetration rising to 114%, up by two percentage points quarter-on-quarter, according to the report.
For the first time ComReg published statistics for Hong Kong-owned mobile operator Hutchison 3G Ireland (3), claiming the Hutchison Whampoa subsidiary had 134,000 subscribers at the end of June 2007, and just 2.8% of the EUR509 million turnover shared by the countrys cellcos in the quarter.
Vodafone accounted for 45.3% of wireless revenues, whilst O2 took 33.8% and Meteor 18.1%. In the internet market, ComReg said Ireland had 1.1 million internet users by mid-2007, of which 63% took broadband services (including 45,000 mobile broadband users).
