...not totally impulse , as I was considering a UMPC - but I certainly wasn't thinking of an Advent from PC World ! - But £299 is nothing , so I picked one up !

Errrr, why? What is the purpose of these very-poorly-selling things? I guess thats why they're not selling so well. No-one knows what the intended purpose of these things is. XP in 7" just seems so ..... well ..... I dunno ...... inadequate I suppose :confused:

As Mr Horse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powdered_Toast_Man#Mr._Horse) in Ren and Stimpy has been heard to say .... "No sir! I don't like it"

:D

Its great ! - you can stand it up with the little thingy on the back , or you can do stuff on it -

£300 well spent IMO (I need something to occupy me until my new ipod gets here)

Anyone know where you put the CD's ?

This might be of some interest to all you early adopters of the iPhone

This is more of a GSM hint and common knowledge for GSM users, but relevant for iPhone users of this site who may have switched from CDMA carriers. Using standard GSM codes, you can change the numbers for conditional forwarding, such as forward if no answer, forward if busy, forward if out of reach. The default is to forward to voicemail, but there are times when you might want to change that. For instance, to forward calls to your home phone if you don't answer, dial this number (then tap the Call button)...

*61*1234567890#

...where 1234567890 is your 10-digit home phone number. Dial ##61# and tap Call again to cancel that setting. When you do cancel, AT&T inserts the proper voicemail number, so everything will be as it was before you started. I do not know how it affects your minutes or if AT&T charges more for forwarded calls. Here's a complete list (http://www.arcx.com/sites/GsmFeatures.htm) of conditional forwarding commands.

If you get to use any of these please report on the success or otherwise :)

This is interesting ,

The UMPC I bought appeared to lack BT (according to PC World) - Both the guy in the shop and the website site assure me that the u1a only supports Wi-fi and not BT - In fact the guy in the shop told me that this lack of was contributory to why they have set the price so low in the first place

........Anyway , I was snooping around in the device manager , when I discovered there is indeed a BT radio , yet whenever I tried to use it , it would report "No radio device" or whatever
I deleted the driver, restarted - XP found the radio , installed it , and it works perfectly !

Is there any reason that PC world would choose to disable BT ? battery life maybe ? (it is pretty poor really ) - or is it possible that a US BT device does not comply with EU regulations or something ?
It is working fine now ..... Dear little thing :D

ARRRGGHH !! Why is everone trying to take the P*** out of me !!??!!

I Paid £299 , which was apparantly a "Final reduction" which "must end Tuesday 25th"

Just looked on PC Worlds website and they are now offering it in store for ...

....£199 ! :mad::(:(

I rang their CS , asking what the hell was going on , I remember distinctly that the words "FINAL REDUCTIONS" were on all the signs at PC world - The guy says he is going to contact the store (Medway) and that the issue would be resolved at their discression , but he said that TBH he didn't think there was "much they could do" -
I said "When I bought it , it had "final reductions" written on the price tag , that was obviously BS , as you have now knocked a further £100 off !"

His reply was "Yes well that was a final reduction on the retail price , this is now a reduction on the sale price, as it is now a clearance item " (
GRRRR

As an aside though - £199 for a UMPC is pretty good going ! I am temped to buy another at that price - look how much Expansys are selling the identical (in all but name ) model for -

Plug in a small keyboard and a external CD /DVD drive and you have a cheap "laptop"

Yeah, I did that with my last PC, and bricked it! A whole PC, bricked.

Gave me a decent excuse, sorry, gave me a decent excuse for the wife, to buy a Mac. :)

I am bound to say that anyone buying anything from PC World brings it upon themselves. I use it purely as a box-shifter. They have nothing to offer me other than price and Sunday-morning availability. I fully expect to get stiffed by them and when I don't it feels like a real bonus :D
