Online price comparison website Moneysupermarket.com has launched a tool to compare pay-as-you-go mobile phone prices, claiming that prepay phones account for 50% of all mobile connections in the UK.

The site will compare deals from Carphone Warehouse, online retailers and direct deals from the networks to allow users to find the cheapest phone on the best tariff, based on their usage. It will also compare pay-as-you-go tariffs with pay-monthly plans.

The facility allows the customer to filter around 10 different search categories, which include network, handset manufacturer, monthly price, free texts allowance and free minutes included in a deal.

Rob Barnes, head of mobiles at the website, said: 'We're launching with five or six key providers and then we will be looking for more providers to come on board. We have no obligations to please any network and the way we run the mobile comparison site is completely transparent. We take data seeds direct from the networks and from the providers themselves.

'What we do is provide a centralised resource for people who want to buy from the internet, but don't want to shop around 15 or 20 different sites.'

The site's contract comparison facility has been running for just under a year and is used by around 250,000 people per month.
