Sony has been getting right up my nose lately. Firstly they imposed some malware in their music CDs, caught a cold and had to back away from that nasty proposition of DRM.

Having not learned their lesson they recently installed the same malware on one of their Memory card devices. Sure enough they've had to back-pedal on that too.

Then they brought out the PS3 in a Super version for the Japanese and American markets. They shipped to Europe a down-spec'd unit which really miffed me, big time. Finally, of late, they trimmed the spec down even more to 40GB disk, fewer USB ports and no backward compatibility with PS2 games.

I really have not been happy with Sony treating us Europeans with such obvious corporate disdain - like a 3 of the games console world.

So imagine even my surprise when I walked out of HMV today with a PS3, 40GB and 2 games (Resistance Fall of Man, and Heavenly Sword) plus 1 BluRay movie (Casino Royale) and a second controller.

Now what are Sony up to? The second controller comes with ...... no USB cable to charge it up with! WTF? Sony really are eaking this out in dribs and drabs. Contrast the XBox 360 which comes with all you need, and the accessories come with all the bits bundled.

Sony don't even include a Component or HDMI cable in the box - hardly a way of showing off the prowess of the PS3. Contrast the XBox 360 which comes with Component and HDMI cables in the box.

Okay, so Sony are going to sell PS3s pretty much no matter what. But I think that they certainly qualify for the title "Scrooge of the consoles".

Where possible I'll be buying non-Sony accessories. A non-Sony Component cable is on its way to me for 1/3 of the price Sony want for their official cable.

To say that I'm happy with the performance, graphics and gameplay would be an understatement. The selection is superb, impressive even. I understand that is not the case with all of the new crop of games. But if this what [some of] the games producers are putting out as first generation PS3 games then the future is bright indeed.

what's stopped me upgrading to a ps3 is the removal of backwards compatibility with ps2 games.

My fiancee is a harry potter game fan, she has chamber of secrets, prisoner of azkaban, goblet of fire, order of the phoenix, and we are currently hunting down a copy of philosophers stone.
These are all PS2 games, and she will not get rid of them, but with the ps3 backwards compatibility issue, I'm getting a wii this christmas instead of a ps3, and the ps2 is being kept as the dvd player and for harry potter.

If the ps3 was shipped with no hard drive but all backwards compatibility was intact, I'd get one straight away.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Wii. I only really play Wii Sports, but it's just fantastic - I'm hooked! First console since the NES n' all.

We [now] have all three of the major consoles here (too many kids in this house, including me :D) and I can second Ben's words. The Wii is superb in every way. The games writers have done a good job with it and Ninendo too with the hardware. I know some of hte games are a bit pants, not carrying over to the Wii's control paradigm very well. Yet others are marvelous, especially those that are a natural fit to the hand gestures required.

You will not be disapointed at all.
