3 have now introduced the new Windows Live Messenger client for the 3Skypephone.
It only takes a couple of minutes to download and install and has UK specific log-in options available. It can be left logged in with audio alerts on for when contacts message you.
The numeric keypad will be the big limitation for this feature but it's worth a try as it's totally free on PAYG until 31/12/2007.
