Britons downloaded a staggering £655 million worth of songs, ringtones and games last year. The entertainment craze has exploded thanks to the rapid march of technology, according to research published yesterday.

Music fans can now get hold of the latest songs or games on their computer or mobile phone at the click of a button. Around half of those questioned in a survey classed themselves as regular downloaders.

The most popular area is musical ringtones for mobile phones, the survey by Churchill home insurance found. Almost 4 in 10 people had bought at least one ring tone, which can cost as much as £3 each. Churchill calculates that Britons downloaded £317 million worth of tunes in the last year.

Why o why o why? That sweety the chick has a lot to answer for.
