Move raises concern Hutch using accounting rules to boost bottom-line hurt by 3G losses and prevent stock from falling, says fund manager. Hutch has spent HK$179 billion building 3G networks, yet has only 7.8 million subscribers as of March. Stock down 0.4% at HK$69 as it goes ex-dividend.(JOG)

Hutchison May Consider 3G Exit

For Hutchison (0013.HK) to make 3G investment successful, global economy must avoid recession, says analyst. Other arms of Hutch, including ports, retail and energy, which subsidizing heavy 3G expenses now, would suffer if there's recession; 3G may never be profitable but Hutch needs to stay in business long enough to make suitable exit via takeover or more likely spin-off to crystallize value, says analyst. Says booking of HK$9.4 billion gain from repurchase of Docomo, KPN stakes in UK 3G operations is part of accounting cut and thrust. Hutch off 0.8% at HK$68.75 after going ex-dividend. (JOG)
