Vodafone have for the longest of times not been leading the pack by any stretch of the imagination. They have, instead, played the just-behind-the-curve runner, safe, cautious, and most definitely not cheap. But their big plus has been their industrial strength network, it is rock solid (even if their billing system sucks big sucky things).

But of late Vodafone have turned tail a bit, quite a bit really. Maybe it is under the stewardship of Sir John Bond (ex-Chair of HSBC) that Arun Sarin has started to shift tack. Sadly Vodafone are doing the shedding-staff thing, which I always think is a mistake, companies are staff not bricks and mortar. But Sir John has steered HSBC through some fairly rocky passages, and he'll no doubt do the same for Vodafone. Certainly, the rest of the mobile network operators had better sit up and listen to the big red V, they'll not sit idly by and let their market be eroded without a good punch up.

All of this is good for us customers though - increased competition, lower prices, better quality, faster speeds .... oh the joy of it all :D
