From Mobile Today (18/05/2005):

Virgin Mobile’s new contract tariffs accounted for 20% of The Carphone Warehouse’s contract connections in their first week on sale, and continue to grow their share of connections.

Andrew Harrison, MD of Carphone, which has a three-month exclusive agreement to sell Virgin contracts, said: ‘I think there is a big pent-up demand for Virgin to enter the [contract] market. On this evidence they are here to stay as a force within the market.’

One reason for the popularity of Virgin’s offer could be the handsets – most of which are offered free with a 200-minute plan. Carphone is promoting around 15 handsets on Virgin, including the Samsung D500, Nokia 6230i and 7610, Motorola V3 and Sony Ericsson’s K700i.

Graeme Hutchinson, Virgin Mobile’s sales and marketing director, said it was too early to reveal sales, but said the MVNO was ‘very pleased’ with the initial take-up.

‘We’ve got the right handsets with the right bundles, with the right promotion,’ he said.
