I'm using O3G on my laptop at the moment via bluetooth to my Nokia 6680. Perhaps we could all post some speedtest results from http://www.adslguide.org.uk ?

Here's mine which, despite the highest port speed in XP being 115kbps, seem to show I'm getting some pretty respectable speeds.

Results from both bluetooth and datacard uses welcome, but please specify which!

Here we go then. I did have a little connection program which produced graphs of your connection time, speed, downloads etc... but they were the most confusing graphs ever!!

I like adslguide.org, however it doesn't allow you to specify your connection type, so it's presuming you're a DSL connection from the off, even though it'll tell you your ISP in the results.

The one i tend to use is: http://www.bandwidthplace.com you'll find the link to the speedtest at the bottom of that page. Once into the speed test you specify your connection type before undertaking the test, so a few choices, ADSL cable etc, and including GPRS, UMTS, CDMA, GSM, HSCSD, in fact, nearly everything! For the purpose of my test, and I think it'd be best if anyone else uses the same site for posting results on here, I picked wireless UMTS in the UK.

Here's the results!

A connection speed of: 629.4 kilobits per second
A transfer rate of: 76.8 kilobytes per second
1Mb file download in: 13.3 seconods

This was undertaken on Orange 3G, using a 6650 Bluetooth connection to my laptop and in full coverage. I'm no more than 1km from site. Pretty ideal conditions, but it shows what you can achieve.

Remember that the time of day, area you undertake the test in i.e. rural, urban, city centre will have dramatic effects on your results as well as the current cell load. But on this occasion Orange is beating the pants off most things!

And just incase you think, na, not possible, I've got a screen dump of the test results page if anyone desperately wants to see it.

Seems to be a very good offering and speeds are very good

Having left a bit of a gap, here's some updated runs on Orange for y'all. Given, these tests were run in the early hours of the morning, but perhaps my flakey signal will cancel out the fact that I'm probably the only person using the network right now...

Using Bandwidth Place I get:
811.7 kilobits per second
Communications 811.7 kilobits per second
Storage 99.1 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 10.3 seconds
Subjective rating Good

Nokia 6680 using Bluetooth interface on Orange.

Any chance you can run adslguides for direct comparison? Bandwidth Place doesn't seem to be giving very accurate results.. at all.

Thanks!

ADSLGuide gave me:

Still using Nokia 6680 via a Bluetooth connection on Orange.

That's more like it. Great download rate there! About 41.6KB/sec transfer rate in real terms. That's about 24.6 seconds to download a megabyte.

By comparison it'd take almost 3 minutes over GSM GPRS.

Not for me, as I have EDGE coverage where I live :)

*cough* Come again? Orange have deployed EDGE in the UK? Can you give any further information, such as whether the rollout is taking place elsewhere and if other areas in the UK currently have a live EDGE offering?

I need more information!

I've only noticed it locally to where I live, so I wouldn't get excited. I did find this on Google Groups though:

Just an addition to the ongoing speed tests we've been adding on here, this was conducted via the Orange MOC and my laptop... definately not the best I've seen..

We've still had no others from the other networks!! Feel free to add to the specific operators section if you can undertake one for us.
