Yes, they really have! O2 UK have started turning on "3G900", automatically available to users of compatible handsets.

Now we can start picking up 3G in the sticks!

No, not quite. O2 has chosen to start the rollout in major cities only, citing that capacity and speeds will increase. Sigh. But that a rollout has started is fantastic news - there was no guarantee we'd see significant 3G900 ahead of spectrum auctions.

Now if only Vodafone UK would follow suit!

I suppose this was inevitable as soon as OFCOM opened the possibility to the networks. O2 are always headline stealers but they rarely deliver with any degree of satisfaction. Remember, they had to be reprimanded by OFCOM for not meeting the terms of their 3G licence in terms of deployment across the country. Somehow they got away without being sanctioned.

So now, when we see O2 switching on 3G900 I have to remain somewhat underwhelmed.

Imagine living near your networks HO ? ...... could you resist the temptation to "pay them a visit" when things get difficult ?
