Berkeley, California – September 1, 2010 - Newfield Wireless® announced today the availability of a new taxation feature set for its flagship network visualization software TrueCall®. Available in TrueCall 2.1, these features allow wireless operators to consider the call origination location in determining the applicable tax liability charged to the operator for each subscriber’s call.

“As wireless operators measure their costs related to delivering subscriber packages, they need to consider the regulatory burden of taxation per user event,” said Warren Dumanski, vice president of sales and marketing, Newfield Wireless. “With TrueCall, an operator is able to precisely determine the number of intrastate, interstate and international calls being made on its network and file appropriate taxes to their regulatory authority.”

The new taxation features are available to customers purchasing the Marketing and Regulatory Module of TrueCall. Users can review all calls (whether voice or data) in the system covering an entire market for more than one year and segment them based on the actual location of the mobile user originating or receiving the call. Furthermore, the taxation features enable identification of intrastate, interstate and international calls to apportion appropriate taxes. While regulatory authorities such as the FCC have established taxation standards for wireless operators based on call disposition, historically wireless operators have had difficulty to prove the location of their subscriber for more favorable tax consideration – until now.

“A New York subscriber roaming in Los Angeles and calling a local phone number would be considered an interstate call in the past,” explains Dumanski. “With TrueCall’s proprietary geolocation capabilities and the new taxation features, an operator can pay taxes applicable for a local call versus an interstate one. Extend that example to millions of daily user events and operators can deliver a much more accurate tax remittance to their regulatory authority.”

This is a rather lengthy post, there is a lot to cover. Don't be put off. I just wanted to encapsulate a 50-page thread from another forum into one single and concise posting. This is it.

I absolutely detest any form of Service Provider (SP) locking of devices, especially those that are obtained on contract. The cost of the device while subsidised is fully recovered over the life of the contract. And so I always take the trouble to unlock such SP locked devices if I can. The Three MiFi is no exception to the rule.

Why even bother in the first place? Well, it is general experience that the UK mobile network operators do not have 100% UK national coverage, even if their coverage maps suggest otherwise. And so it is, usually, convenient to be able to pop in another network's SIM should the situation arise.

Attachment 1127

There are plenty of paid-for Unlock deals for the Three MiFi (the E585 being their current model). These hover around the £10 mark. But the great thing is that the unlock code is embedded in the MiFi firmware if only you could get to it.

And so you can. But it does take a little bit of work with a software tool and about 30 minutes of your time if you pace yourself and don't rush.

At this point I must stress that you do any of this at your own risk. If you get it wrong then you have only yourself to blame. But outside of that rather stern sounding caveat I should just say that it really is a simple process.

The main part of the process is culled from another site. You will have to download the PSAS software and install it to your Windows PC (works with XP, Vista and Windows 7). There may be a bit of adjusting settings required, I will cover these off after the main process itself.

Important: This is very, very, very important. Before you make a start on this please ensure that you read this entire posting and gather together and install and make sure that you know where all the software is that you will need.

()- General Info
""- Click to select on PSAS

Requirements:

3 wireless Manager- (whatever software that came with your modem, in order to recognise your modem on usb mode)
PSAS Software from Phone System Analysis Software - PSAS | The successor of QMAT - (on the downloads page)
MS Windows Notepad- (This is from accesories on windows START menu)

SETUP to get everything ready to unlock your Mi-Fi)

Install PSAS software on windows computer.

After this, change the sim card inside your modem,
(to a diferent network sim card)
connect to the computer with usb cable and install the software that come with your Mi-Fi,then close down the Mi-Fi software.
(make sure that you are not connected to the modem via wireless and the software that come with your Mi-Fi is not running, this step is only for instalation of the Mi-Fi Drivers)

USING PSAS To retrieve your unlock code)

Run PSAS
On PSAS main page you have tab menus, select the "Hardware Forensics" menu tab and select "Use Mobile Port" this will open another PSAS program window for you (which is where all the magic happens)

In the new window:
on the "SETUP" menu tab (which you are on already)just select the "Serial COM Port" (you need to choose the one that says that is your 3G Application Interface, not the one that says PC UI Interface whatever the COM Port), then select the "baud speed" (This varies depending on the computer speed and windows OS), and thats all you have to do for the setup menu tab

Next go to the "DIAG" menu tab and click on "send" this should now show some numbers on the open space box below, On the 'Diag Functions box' (box below the "send" button box)you wanna select "Read EFS" instead of Save memory to file then tick "Alternative Method" then on "max page" type: 250 (i did 250 but can range from 200 to 600 depending on the lines), then click "lets go", this will ask you to save a file so just name it and save it onto desktop. (you have to keep trying, PSAS will crash often and the more lines the most likely to crash)Once it works it will save the file to the desktop You now have a log file which will tell you your unlock code

USING NOTEPAD to find your unlock code from PSAS log file)

Open Notepad
Now open this log with windows notepad and search for your code. The easiest way is to use the find feature in your
notepad and type "PST" (NB: See also below) this will send you to your unlock code which are the numbers after the word PST, if you look
around you will also see your srl. number.
(if your note pad hasnt found the word PST in search it means you have to get more lines on the "Max page" procedure)

INSERTING ACTIVATION CODE Last step, entering the Unlock code.

Now connect your Computer to your Mi-Fi wireless and try to open any page, this will redirect you to 192.168.1.1/simlock.asp if not type "192.168.1.1/simlock.asp" into your browser and when the page loads type the code that you got from notepad

MY MESSAGE:

Thanks to all the posters in this forum you have really helped me and saved me some time and cash. Hope this will do the same for others.

I cannot guarantee this will work for you but this is what i did to get my E585 unlocked, if anything happens to your Mi-Fi do not hold me responsible for it, as all this information is already in this post i merely compiled, thus the reason i thank all the people that posted here. Good luck doing yours, read the forums it was hard for me as it was my first time but be resilient and you will succeed!!

Source URL: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/6265659-post108.html

Searching for the Unlock Code
There appear to be a number of versions of the E585 firmware out in the wild. In the above procedure you are advised to search for the string "PST" in the log file that you produced using PSAS.

Elsewhere on that forum one experienced member advises to search for the string "LT P" (again, without the quotes but exactly as shown here). If correct then you will see an 8-digit string of numbers to the right of the search string.

PSAS keeps crashing or won't work
I believe that this may be an issue limited to Windows 7 and the E585 together. What happens is that while producing the log file PSAS may error in Windows 7 and have to be force closed. The answer to this is to reduce the speed that PSAS uses to communicate with the E585. In my case I set the speed to 57,600 which worked fine. You do not need a fast speed as you are only going to be working with a tiny amount of data to be retrieved from the E585. So just go for a low speed or try setting the PSAS speed slower successively until one works.

Note, you may have to unplug the E585 and then plug it back in again between changes of speed in PSAS. You may also need to power the E585 off and then on again between each speed change.

Conclusion
So, assuming you followed everything above correctly, that you didn't experience any issues that you could not overcome, and that everything worked as it should have, then you should have a fully working and unlocked Three E585 MiFi in your hands.

Enjoy :)

On Thursday of last week I received an unsolicited SMS message from Vodafone to inform me that I was approaching the 500MB data limit.

On Thursday of last week I received an unsolicited SMS message from Vodafone to inform me that I was approaching the 500MB data limit. Further, that I would be charged £5 per 500MB if I go over the limit. That technically means that even 1 byte in excess of the 500MB could cost me £5. Thats a pretty hefty price for mobile data.

My usage of the Google Nexus One that carries this contract SIM changed modestly recently, during August. Basically I am using an additional, and busier, email account plus making a bit more use of web browsing. What this essentially means is that with a small change in use it is very easy indeed to reach or exceed the 500MB limit. It is rather miserly, in my opinion.

So I made a few comments on Vodafone's Twitter channel (@VodafoneUK) which received a swift response this morning - gotta love those Vodafone eForum mods. It was Jenny today who referred me to an announcement located on the Vodafone eForum here --> http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/forum-53...rnet-charging/ This contains full details and a set of alternatives available to the customer.

Reading through the document it was beginning to look that I was destined to having to ask for my PAC and leave the company.

Later in the morning I DMd Jenny to ask if there was anything Vodafone could do. My letter to them requesting my PAC was written, but it was worth an ask before I posted it off. And soon after that Jenny contacted me on the phone and worked out that I could have the 500MB increased to 1GB at no additional charge or change to the contract length or price. I accepted and am content to run with the contract through to its end in June 2011.

The eForum team are usually more effective than any other channel in Vodafone. I've used them several times in the past to resolve issues that are not always quite straightforward and where the regular CS staff are likely to draw a blank.

Oh well, lets see how 1GB works for me then. If not, there is always June 2011 :)

I was reading this article earlier on my iPad (via Flipboard, of course) and it got me thinking. How do we use the items we equip ourselves with to extend an image of ourselves to those around us? What do the items we choose to carry really say about us? I'd bet that, more often than not, what people actually perceive is different to what we intended, if we had a conscious intention at all.

The iPhone divides opinion as well as any Apple product. That's a risky proposition for those who carry them, as holding an iPhone is likely to result in some sort of snap judgement about the owner. So lets start with that.

For me, an iPhone screams an appreciation of quality. An understanding that, often times, we get what we pay for. It's about simplicity, efficiency, and desiring a high level of integration between computing environments. It also tells me that the owner is somewhat creative, and perhaps a little playful. There's something fun about the iOS UI and that's before I even consider the hundreds of thousands of apps. It does also say, however, that the owner is willing to sacrifice a certain amount of control to Apple, Inc, in exchange for an easy life.

Android is a little more tricky. There are tens of Android-powered handsets out there now, widely varying in quality and target market. There's definitely something utilitarian about Android, I just can't get away from that, but it does give out an aura of sophistication too. Competition in the Android space also provides value, with very high end specifications coming in significantly cheaper than one would expect to pay for an iPhone, suggesting that owners are rather frugal. The styling of the handset an Android user chooses is likely to make the biggest impression, but with manufacturers like HTC leading the charge it's easy to look at a lot of Android devices and think… boring. The Desire, for example, is about as desirable as most newsreaders these days - no depth. Which is a bit of a contradiction, because Android users typically have a lot of freedom to customise their devices and make them into extensions of their personalities.

BlackBerry? That says two things to me. Enterprise, chained to corporate inbox. Woman, chained to BBM! Despite BlackBerry's popularity I also still see a certain amount of individualism in a BlackBerry owner. I definitely see it as a communication tool, a workhorse, rather than anything particularly flamboyant. Having never owned one they're slightly mystical to me, and somehow I don't see that many in the wild, either. I suppose that comes from operating a more informal business environment than many corporates would.

Then there's Symbian, and I'm referring predominantly to Nokias, here. High-end Nokia phones write zealot all over their owners in permanent black marker. Brand loyalty. Believing in a way of doing things to the extent that the owner will stick with that system through the bad, sometimes even giving vocal opposition but more irritatingly continuing to scream the virtues, and holding out for improvements. Sorry! Then there's the other kind of Symbian user, the one who doesn't even know they're using Symbian because they've got what would otherwise be a mid-range feature phone as a free upgrade and only call and text. Scratch that, they probably read texts and get their other half to reply.

One type of Nokia owner does escape my somewhat dowdy views, and that's a Maemo (I suppose I include MeeGo here) user. There's still something alluring about being on the cutting edge, having something new, experimenting with something that most of us aren't sure of, or possibly haven't even heard of yet. This is the sort of thing that would've caught my eye a few years back before the iPhone came along and made my life easier. Due to what I do it's not really practical for me to experiment anymore, so instead I look on with rose tinted contact lenses at those in the fray - forgetting how frustrating being an early adopter usually is and remembering the more exciting aspects of being thrown in at the deep end.

But that's all just what I think, and as I've come to appreciate we all build up very different views of such superficial things as this. Indeed, I'm amazed that the mobile somebody carries speaks as much to me as it apparently does!

So what do you think? Do phones and other devices, like the iPad, say much about their owners? If you see a middle aged suited businessman with shiny shoes and a briefcase prodding at an iPhone instead of a BlackBerry are you going to assume they're a bit of a trendy flake rather than somebody to be taken seriously?

I wonder what my Three MiFi says about me to onlookers… especially when I'm using it with my iPad! Cheapskate? Would Vodafone Mobile WiFi make me a sucker? ;)

I think Huawei could become a real force in handsets running Android if they choose to be. I doubt we'll see anything too innovative or high end, but what we will see is low cost and decent performance.
