Just to keep things nice and simple, I'll put the bits you'll need for updating the firmware on the E5830 from Three, and unlocking it, here, and leave the thread open for discussion on this device.

The upgrade details are here: http://www.shadwell.eu/paul_shadwell...-firmware.html

Nice and easy to be honest, once you're done (takes a while) just connect over WiFi and go to 192.168.1.1 and you've got access to everything :) Password is "admin".

The unlock is here: http://www.speedyshare.com/files/229...lock-e58xx.zip

Watch the youtube video. Seriously. Save yourself an age! Very quick and easy once you know what you're doing.

Once you've set connection to Auto and turned off the WiFi timeout the E5830 will blow you away. It works like it always should have done (or at least been able to) - you push a button and it stays on and connected for as long as you want it to.

This incarnation may have been superseded but the ease of updating and unlocking along with the performance means I wouldn't hesitate for a second in recommending one if you come across it at the right price. I'm actually considering another one if I see it around, I'd like one that I can leave the Voda SIM in as the battery cover and battery has to come off in order to do a swap.

We have the UK’s biggest 3G network and we’re continuing to build an even better network for our customers. Our aim is to increase cover of the UK population from 92.5 % (in 2009) to over 98% by the end of this year. This means better coverage for using the internet on your phone; and a faster service for our Mobile Broadband customers. And we’ll continue to provide 99% coverage for calls and texts.

Three have gone from my backup mobile broadband provider to my primary one. For some reason I still wouldn't trust them with my mobile (once bitten twice shy, I guess), but I can now wholeheartedly recommend mobile broadband on Three.
