Thumbs downO2 slows downgrading

From Mobile Today 20/12/2006:

O2 is set to change its downgrading rules, following rivals 3 and Orange. Customers will have to wait till after month nine of their contract to downgrade tariffs as of 1 January.

They will also only be able to downgrade one tariff a month. The current rules state customers can downgrade to any tariff after month six on both 12 and 18 month contracts. Moving to a higher tariff is possible at any time.

3 and Orange have both introduced similar downgrading rules recently and 3 is now charging customers £25 for each downgrade. The rules have been put in place to stop dealers and retailers encouraging tariff downgrades as part of their sales pitch.

To be honest I'd rather see a return to 12-month contracts where customers can't change-down tariffs rather than all this crazy 18 month malarky. Either that or, heaven forbid, we actually start charging folk for their handsets and making the contracts much more flexible!
