That is true enough. But there is a certain satisfaction to be gained from building your own. Plus you get exactly what you want, rather than what someone else decides you should have for your £500 or whatever. Anything bespoke costs more than factory line commodity product.
If anyone asks me to build for them I always tell them that it will be more expensive. Much cheaper alternatives are to assemble larger chunks. For instance, LCD from Aria, built chassis from Ginger6 and suchlike. Or go the whole hog, as you say, and buy a complete system from Dell or one of the otehrs.
But the appeal of building is strong, judging by the gatherings at the regular Sunday computer fairs.
