Default "Free" International Calls from Mobiles?

An interesting article on Moneysavingexpert.com - it could work for you.

I have used this kind of thing for cheap/free landline calls overseas, but didn't know they could be used from Mobiles. So this is a nice surprise for that occasional [or not so occasional] phone call to abroad.

Mobile phone company prices for calling mobiles would make even BT blanche. Yet there’s a sneaky way to bypass their charges and make international calls for free to over 50 countries, possibly saving you hundreds a year.

Interesting addition:

Quote:
T-Mobile & Orange. For most tariffs, both allow calls to 07744 numbers as part of the cross network free minute allocations.

O2. It used to allow calls to 07744 numbers as part of the free minutes but has now stopped it. Yet the specialist providers have found a way round this by introducing 0870 access numbers instead, which are, uniquely free on O2. Thus the system works in exactly the same way, just with different access numbers, although currently only Simply-fone, Dial-abroad and You Call World offer it to 02 customers.

Vodafone & Three. Sadly the system no longer works for Vodafone or 3 and most users report being charged for 07744 numbers. Read 'What to do if you can’t play the system' for other options.

Other networks. Reports are that it's still fine for other networks. Obviously be vigilant, check your bills each month to ensure it hasn't started to charge.
I'd imagine the numbers in question have abnormally high termination rates, which is how the company behind them makes money. Networks can, will and have excluded such numbers from their inclusive call time - so be careful!
