Mobile Handsets - paving the way into 2010

by on 18th October 2009 at 04:31 PM (Rambling with Hands0n)
The past few years have been dominated by one handset above all others, the Apple iPhone. And rightly so, I would contend. The device and it's OS have set the bar at a height that other manufacturers are struggling to reach, and have been since its launch. But the point of this blog is not to recap on history.

As we draw to the end of 2009 I am taken with the recent number of new handsets coming out that are vying for the crown held by the iPhone. Each new iteration of handset seems ...

Cocoa programming for Mac OS X - How hard can it be?

by on 20th March 2009 at 10:08 PM (Rambling with Hands0n)
The book title is "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X for Dummies", another in that great series of books whose title does the content little justice. But hey! I see quite a few "Dummies" books around the Dev shop I work in and so think it not too demeaning for me to consult one of these tomes for myself in this time of my need.

Cocoa, as any self-respecting Mac owner will know, is The programming language for the OS X based Apple Mac computer. It is also the same ...

iPhone software version 3.0 - please all be upstanding

by on 20th March 2009 at 09:47 PM (Rambling with Hands0n)
One might be forgiven for thinking that royalty had just knighted Steve Jobs, or that aliens had landed on Table Mountain. The hysteria that has gripped the world vis a vis iPhone OS 3.0 is astonishing.

You only have to visit the regular Apple forums to witness all manner of trailer trash feverish in their assessment of Apple's new iPhone operating system. Some, or many, appear to have actualy forked out the $99 fee to register as an Apple Developer Connection (ADC) member just to ...

How Green are your transport policies?

by on 26th June 2008 at 10:22 PM (Rambling with Hands0n)
Some of you will know me as a rather keen motorcyclist. It is my preferred means of commuting the 25 miles from home to the office in London. Public transport of all forms cannot compete in terms of price and, more importantly for my quality of life, convenience. I prize my quality of life above all else, and refuse to accept lightly the general indignity that public transport subjects one to.

I have three of the beasties in my garage, one for the main commute, the other two for different ...

Iron Man, the movie. Is it all that its cracked up to be?

by on 4th May 2008 at 11:00 PM (Rambling with Hands0n)
Let me start by saying a big and fully qualified Yes

The movie is awesome and Robert Downey Jr. is superb in the part. He plays Tony Stark exactly as one would expect him to be. The film has a great mix of action, humour and a bit of a love angle too in the shape of Gwyneth Paltrow (well, who wouldn't?).

The story itself is well laid out, it has a beginning, a huge middle, and a stonking action-filled ending. A perfect big screen romp for those that like this kind ...
