Is this it ? Have my years of being on the forefront of technology come to an abrupt end ?
I have always been quite proud of the fact that I can seemingly communicate with any kind of moble phone , even without instructions , but now I fear that is all in the past , and I am going to have to rely on my four year old for guidance on these things ?

It all started when I gave in to the temptation of an SE P990i - these are going for £89.99 on Oranges "Reconditioned" site , although I am very aware of the "troubles" this model had , I have read that the latest firmware corrects a multitude of sins , and lets face it , that is a hell of a lot of phone for £90 !

So I got it yesterday - the Orange UI looked pretty awful (identical to the orange UI on most orange handsets - with the menu bar down the left hand side and the funny "sea" wallpaper ) ,... Well I am not having that , so I debranded it before doing anything else
Debranding was a piece of cake , took about 10 minutes , seemingly a similar process to debranding an S60 handsets via NSU ....That was the easy part !
Now comes the REAL trouble - trying to use the bloody thing !
I remember UIQ from Three's early days - I used an a920 , a925 and an a1000 , and at the time I was very impressed with each device in turn , simple to use , pleasing, capable UI ... Yes , I like UIQ and TBH considered it to be "superior" to S60
S60 is your Mickey mouse OS for those that didn't quite make the leap from Mobile phone to PDA , where as UIQ was pretty much a proper PDA
So what the hell went wrong ?

Not only does the P990i UI feel tacky, and "mobile phone" -ey , but actually doing ANYTHING on it is nigh on impossible !
I have only just (after a day and a half of tinkering ) learned how to change any kind of setting ! - every time I try to leave the contacts app , I end up deleting a contact !

When I look at the Entertainment menu - it contains one item (with the flap up ) - but if I put the flap down , another 5 items appear !

Please keep in mind , that my devices of choice are usually the most feature packed of a particular range (my current handsets are E90 , T-mobile Ameo , iPhone ) It's not like I am adverse to devices having lots of features etc

Maybe it is just because I am not used to UIQ ? But I am sure that WM5/6 , S60 , mobile OSX , or even the old UIQ devices confused me so much !

Maybe I am right , I am just getting to old for all this ?

No mate - you have simply outgrown your memory of what UIQ was like. I had an A1000 and loved it, for all of about three days. I could not get rid of it quickly enough.

Besides, you have an iPhone - nothing, absolutely nothing, is going to let you take such a huge step back in time ever again
