The Nokia N97 arrived not without a few bugs and feature shortfalls compared to its competition. But not to be daunted, Nokia have laboured away to resolve the issues reasonably quickly. They had to, the competition these days for high-end handsets is too strong for a complacent approach.

V12 firmware is out already, and Vodafone UK users are beginning to be able to update using NSU. Although that itself is not without trouble - not everyone is able to access V12. Vodafone and Nokia are working on it.

But in October this year Nokia V20 firmware should be out for the N97. Operator-specific releases will follow some time after, possibly months if V12 is anything to go by - released in August but the Vodafone code only just available at end September.

The headline feature in V20 is Kinetic Scrolling. iPhone and Android users will be completely familiar with the concept.

It is a real nuisance that operator branding can still hold back releases of firmware, making owners wait an inordinate time, or not at all. Time for all of this nonsense to stop and do as Apple and Google Android do - blanket releases of the OS code as and when it happens.
