Today's event was vital spin and fanfare to keep Nokia in the mindset of everyone. While the N9 is an appealing device it is quite important to listen to Nokia's own people saying that it was a device that they'd launched in order to "learn from" users' experience. That means, people, that in buying one you are paying Nokia to be one of the guinea pigs, lab rats, whatever
What will they do with this learning? Probably plough it in to the WP7 product, or whatever it is called when it finally arrives in 2012.
