The iPhone still amazes and wins hearts and minds

Like moths to a flame, the iPhone still pulls 'em in.

It is quite amazing how this little device has such an attraction for people. Most times when I take it out folk get all glazed eyed over the thing. It is most certainly 2007/8's object of desire.

Today has been my eldest son's 21st birthday and we ran an open house for friends and family to come round to visit. Later in the day the younger peers arrived to help drink and eat us out of the home. Fat chance, my Mrs is an accomplished hostess and generally prepares sufficient food and drink for the proverbial 5,000. Believe me, we'll be eating party food for the next several days. Jelly for breakfast, anyone? I digress.

A family of three brothers arrived, one after the other through the evening. The middle one made mention that he'd heard that I have an iPhone. So without further ado I handed the thing over to him to play with. "I don't think I can work this" he said as the screen lit up. But with just a tiny bit of guidance as to how to navigate around he was operating it like an old pro in moments. "Wow!" he said, "This is so easy to use, I just get it" which, dear readers, is exactly the point of the iPhone - and for that matter pretty much what ever else Apple do. People just get it, and very quickly too. Contrast that with almost any other technology you can lay your hands on. This is why a manual for the iPhone is completely redundant.

Later in the evening the youngest brother arrived and within minutes hooked me over to chat about things iPhone. He's coming up to 15 and just wants one to use with a PAYG SIM. "No problem" said I, "The iPhone can be unlocked and jailbroken in minutes". To which he told me that a lot of his friends have either done this or intended to. They are all taken with the idea of the combination iPod, Phone and Browser - pretty much what Steve Jobs punted to the crowd when the iPhone was launched in the USA.

I really do wonder what the iPhone would have done in terms of sales if it had not been locked to O2 - instead sold optionally. I do think O2's existing minutes, text and data bundle is amazing value for £35 (it was a bit pants at launch). But there is clearly a market for iPhone PAYG that is not being satisfied with the incumbent sales model. Whether or not O2 and/or Apple face up to this remains to be seen. But meanwhile, the means to unlock and jailbreak continues to run in the close wake of any new firmware releases from Apple. It is a good thing too, as it does promote the device outside of the strict dimension it is supposed to exist within. That means more sales and with it brand "presence" in the community.

Today was supposed to be a completely non-technical day for me. I am off work until next week, painting and decorating. The toys are awaiting my full-time return, but get used only for essential duties right now. But there I was, today, pulled back into talking about and giving advice and information on not only the iPhone but Vodafone contract arrangements etc.

Just another day in the life of me I wonder what tomorrow will bring.
