    iPhone liberated

    by , 5th December 2009 at 01:44 AM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
I think we've reached a stage of mass enlightenment where I can say that the iPhone 3GS is quite simply the best mobile phone that money can buy without fear of swift and harsh retribution from ant-apples.

Not because the rivalry between iPhone users and users of other devices/platforms has lessened in anyway. Just because it's true.

If only finding the best mobile network was as clear-cut. Mobile coverage is still so 'thin' that finding the best mobile network is incredibly ...

    Turn back time

    by , 18th July 2009 at 12:25 PM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
Wondering vaguely back into the territory of using song titles on my blog posts...

I've been thinking a little about some of the massive mistakes that still plague our mobile industry to this day. These mistakes contribute significantly to the status of the UK mobile market at this time.

    GSM Licences

It's no secret that the GSM/PCS licences issued yonks ago to mobile operators in the UK restrict the usage of the frequency allocated. What this did was ...

    No coverage? So sue me.

    by , 23rd February 2009 at 11:02 AM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
It was quite nice to read this morning that somebody has successfully taken their mobile operator to court and, as a result, had their contract terminated and been paid some form of compensatory amount due to lack of usable mobile network coverage.

Unfortunately, this is also a perfect reflection of the arrogance of our mobile operators in the UK, who believe they can act with impunity. To think that Orange UK had the audacity to hold a customer to a lengthy contract when they were ...

    The Shift

    by , 10th February 2009 at 12:42 AM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
Well, we're in 2009 now and sure enough the shift towards 3G domination appears to be taking place. All the top selling handsets these days are 3G enabled, many of them featuring the latest improvements to the technology in the form of various speeds of HSPA.

So what benefits are we reaping from this move that has cost the mobile industry billions of pounds and that we, ultimately, will pay the bill for?

Well, early adopters reaped one hell of a lot of grief, especially ...

    Just one phone

    by , 23rd July 2008 at 12:37 PM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
For as long as I can remember I have carried around two mobile phones - one for business, and one for everything else.

This was great when all I used to carry was a 7610 and an 8310. Both were tiny and not much of a burden on my pockets.

Things all changed with the advent of 3G. Suddenly larger handsets with many more capabilities became more desirable. Despite a desire to carry two such phones, not being a big fan of full pockets I have instead been forced to keep ...
