    With great power...

    by , 16th March 2009 at 12:24 PM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
It can't be denied that Trusted Reviews, a tech news and reviews site I frequent, has been incredibly successful over the last few years. It's ranked ~7,000 in the world on Alexa, some toolbar thing that tracks website popularity, and that's no mean feat.

Unfortunately I can't help but feel it has somehow lost sight of what it was that made it so successful. I mean, damn, due to one of Riyad's excellent, relevant reviews I bought a Sony T2XP. These days, I find it hard to take TR ...

    Money vs Stuff

    by , 21st February 2009 at 12:24 PM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
We're all familiar with the eternal dilemma of whether or not to buy the latest and greatest gadget that has just hit the streets. Money spent on gadgetry, you see, is very hard to recover - you're not making a monitory investment when you buy an iPhone, you're buying it because you need/want it completely aware that it will have no real value within a few years.

Spending money in this way is less of a dilemma and more of a way of life for Talk3G regulars. Hence why the Chinese economy ...

    Evangelism

    by , 15th November 2008 at 03:40 PM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
A recent thread about the Google/HTC G1 had me thinking a little bit about evangelism, in terms of folk who spread the word about something very enthusiastically.

Now, we all love to defend and big up our favourite things. After all, when we like something we want it to do well, and we have a genuine desire for other people to share in our experience and, in many cases, not 'waste' their money on something we regard to be sub-standard.

There's also the element of 'sticking ...

    We must ask questions

    by , 28th October 2008 at 02:34 PM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
Many seismic events happen in our countries, and our globalised world at large, that are largely incomprehensible to us all. Events such as 9/11 and the current financial crisis leave many of us with questions within ourselves, many of which are answered by an almost-scientific absorption of what we're told by the media coupled with an almost-religious absorption of conspiracy theories to fill in the blanks that the state can't or wont.

Why do we accept these answers rather than pursue ...

    Where's my next generation network?

    by , 22nd September 2008 at 10:10 PM (Ben's Talk3G Blog)
Most people reading this will have been introduced to the Internet via dial-up over the copper telephone line.

I certainly was. Not back in the heady 9600bps days, mind you. No, I joined the Internet with the late-to-the-party 28,800bps generation, and was rendered out-of-date in a ping by the mighty 56k.

It all seems like the distant past now ADSL has come and conquered. Indeed, ADSL connections to the Internet are now even cheaper than all but the 'free' dial-up services ...
